Raven Long

Flames by Raven

“Every time I make candles, the house smells like honey! Who could ask for a better job?”

I started making candles when I was twelve years old. I spent hours in adolescence looking for new ideas for candle  projects.  I’ve made sand candles, dipped, molded and free-form candles.  When I returned to candle making a few years ago, I realized I didn’t want to work with paraffin again.  I decided to use natural waxes – particularly beeswax, but also soy and palm wax as well.

Years before this, I had learned about luminaries from friends in a commune in Harrisonburg (sadly now defunct). I loved them – so delicate and graceful – and decided to try my hand at them.

The name of my business, Flames by Raven, is a play on my wife’s and my names (Flame and Raven – no, really!).  And the native American myth of Raven bringing fire to the People (which I first heard at a native potlatch in Chief  Lelooska’s lodge on a fourth grade field trip) brought all the pieces together.
