Capturing the natural beauty and wonder of American wood™
Alex Pettigrew has a long history in designing and crafting wood products. He is a native of rural Missouri, currently lives in Chesterfield, Virginia and owns Windy Hill Farm in North Garden. This background, combined with his environmental consciousness, led him to begin Pettigrew Woodworks. He finds beauty and usefulness in American and especially Virginia grown woods. Alex blends artistry, unique designs, and practicality to craft products that are both useful and beautiful.
Alex believes there is an environmental benefit to using local sources since the woods have not traveled great distances. He often uses recycled or salvaged wood that otherwise might end up in a landfill. His product tags usually identify if an item features woods of this source. Alex handcrafts with an eye to bringing out the natural beauty of the wood. The wood becomes as important to the design as the form. He uses no stains, relying on the natural palette available in the broad array of woods employed. He chooses finishes to provide practical protection for the specific application. Objects are typically not finished to a high gloss as this impairs the feel of the wood.
In addition to the Downtown Charlottesville Gallery, C’ville Arts, Alex’s work can be found at these shops:
