“Perfect Vessels” – New Work in Glass by Mary Ellen Larkins, May 2015

unnamedOur wonderful and ever innovative fused glass artist Mary Ellen Larkins will be C’ville Arts Cooperative Gallery’s featured artist during the month of May. She will be at the gallery on Friday, May 1st from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. during the Historic Downtown Mall’s First Friday event.

Mary Ellen Larkins has been creating fused glass jewelry for more than fifteen years and has produced literally thousands of earrings, pendants, pins, and bracelets. In recent years, her focus has shifted to large bowls and plates that are both decorative and practical, and to art pieces that can be hung on walls or displayed on mantels and credenzas. She finds the bowls, in particular, to be “perfect vessels” to highlight the intrinsic beauty of the materials and the graceful line of the object.

Many artists won’t attempt these vessels because of the multi-step process and the necessity of donning fireproof body and face protection to manipulate the glass in a 1200 degree kiln.”

After several sessions of this open kiln manipulation, the resulting form is subjected to many hours of cold working and sensitive hand polishing. The final aesthetic is achieved by the application of an elegant matte finish — and the signature of the proud artist who has achieved the “perfect vessel.”

Most recently Mary Ellen has started combining enamels, glass frit, and powdered glass to produce lovely landscapes suitable for hanging. Examples of this work will be included in her exhibit at C’ville Arts.
