Virginia’s Wild Things – New Work by Genevieve Story, June 2018

June 2018 C’ville Arts will feature our gifted leather artist and designer, Genevieve Story for the month of June. She will be at the gallery on June 1st, from 6 – 8 p.m. to share her charming collection during the First Friday opening reception and celebration on the historic downtown mall.
Genevieve expresses her joy using a technique called Pyrography or pyrogravure. It is the art of decorating wood and other materials in her case leather, with burn marks resulting from the controlled application of a heated object. She has developed her skills masterfully and will focus this show on all Virginia’s Wild Things. Her creatures are innocent, polite and rather charismatic, sure to elicit a smile.
With a background in Wildlife Biology and her ongoing volunteer work for the Wildlife Center of Virginia, Story’s love of wildlife is clear to see and runs deep throughout her work. All things from the natural world inspire her designs with an emphasis on native flora and fauna from Virginia, she manages to capture your heart with each detailed composition. Her work is not only irresistible, but it’s functional too! She presents her light hearted designs on high quality leather products which are handmade by her brother–in–law, Peter Yencken. He fills his inspiration by both making and teaching folks from ages 5 to 90 the traditional skills of creating your own usable everyday items. Peter teaches at various schools as well as private and group lessons in his Charlottesville home.
Genevieve has taken his trade and their partnership to another level. Her delicate and delightful works appear on items such as refillable leather journals, pendants, simple wallets, bags, jar handles and so much more.
