C’ville Arts Cooperative Gallery is presenting the amazing colors and textures of Karen Shapcott’s felted art. She will be at the opening on Friday, September 2nd from 6 to 8 p.m.during the Historic Downtown Mall’s First Friday event.
Cultural felt making was a necessary part of everyday life providing functional clothing, rugs and even walls for homes. Our featured artist, Karen Shapcott, has been exploring the artistic modern forms of felting for the past twenty years. Her passion is exhibited in two expressive and exciting forms.
The first method of felting is a dry technique called “needle felting” in which natural fibers are drawn together with a barbed needle. Karen creates a whimsical cast of characters that projects her sense of humor and each piece elicits a smile. She was selected to represent the state of Virginia with her Christmas gnomes for the National Christmas Tree in 2015.
The second method is a wet technique called “nuno felting”. Karen is well known and respected for her unique wearable works of art created by this method. This process involves the layering of hand dyed silk, colorful wool, and shiny embellishments that are worked together to create one of a kind pieces. She finds joy and energy throughout the creative process and her enthusiasm is contagious. She is also known for her joy of teaching and sharing her skills. Spending time with Karen in her studio is an adventure worth taking. Whether you are looking for a special gift or want to learn the art of felt making, this is an artist with a collection of talent you will enjoy.
