C’ville Arts Features: “COLOR, PATTERN AND DESIGN: An Inspiration-sparked Creative Journey with Polymer Clay” by Judith N. Ligon, during December

Nature is filled with an abundance of colors, patterns and designs which influence us in our everyday living from the foods we eat, to the clothes we wear, to the designs of our dwellings and how we decorate our homes, to the designs of the vehicles we drive and so much more.  This abundance of color, pattern and design is what inspires Judith N. Ligon to create with polymer clay, a petroleum-based clay which is available in many different brands and colors and is cured or hardened through baking.

Judith is the December featured artist at C’ville Arts Cooperative Gallery located on the Historic Downtown Mall in Charlottesville, Virginia. Visitors to the gallery can meet her and see her lovely variety of art works during First Friday, December 6th, from 5 to 8 p.m.

The year of 2003 marked the beginning of an exciting creative journey for Judith N. Ligon when she learned how to make a basic leaf cane. A cane is a pattern or design, made by mixing different clay colors into a blend, then slicing and adding other colors or designs that results in a whole new design or pattern by itself, such that when it is sliced the new pattern or design goes all the way through with each slice taken from the cane. It’s MAGIC! One can achieve multiples of the same pattern or design as well as manipulate the clay or sculpt it to meet the needs of the project at hand before baking to harden the piece. Having the ability to recreate what is seen in nature is like magic and sharing this magical gift of creating has brought this artisan joy which she happily passes on to others.

Judith graduated from Longwood College with a BA degree in English/Art in 1973 and began her career doing shows with her acrylic painting and photography. Then she focused on creating with enamels and mixed metals, making wall pieces or wearable art for thirty-five years until discovering the magic and fun of creating with polymer clay in 2003. She was honored as a professional artisan with the Artisans Center of Virginia as an enamellist and later as a polymer clay artisan. Ligon’s work is in private collections across Virginia as well as in other states and countries. She has also enjoyed teaching workshops as well as individuals and creating illustrations for well-known authors.

Judith’s photography and some images of her polymer clay creations can be found on Instagram (ligonart) or Facebook (Judith Ligon; Ligon Art).
