C’ville Arts is happy to announce Eileen Butler, an enthusiastic painter and mosaicist will be our featured artist for the month of June. She will be at the gallery to share her latest collection on June 7, from 5 – 7 p.m. during the Historic Downtown Mall’s First Friday celebration.
Eileen is a painter who mixes drawing marks into her work because she loves energetic movement in her art. She is a mosaicist because she loves shiny glass, rich deep color and loves to construct things by hand. So, she does both with overlapping subject matter which always refers to nature & fluidity.
Growing up on Long Island Sound, her favorite color became turquoise, the color of the water surrounding her childhood. You can see straight through it to the sand or pebble floor, the color, light and movement it evokes is rhythmic and magical. Turquoise promotes feelings of relaxation, tranquility and calm, and water and wind inspires all her work. Eileen’s art flows in various forms and media which allows room to invent new ways of making her art speak for itself.
Mosaics represent the hard surfaces of her North Shore Beaches, incorporating the movements of the sea in her designs. It’s not until the first piece of a series is completed that she discovers the path, it’s new every time she begins a series whether in paint or mosaic. Working this way keeps her motivated, her art fresh, and frees her to focus on the challenges of creating fluid inspirations from solid surfaces while letting the voice of her colors speak up. Richness is achieved through mixtures of media with layers of colors for the sake of surprise or whimsy.
As an art educator for decades, Eileen observed anyone with a bit of motivation can tap their own creativity. It inspires her when someone sees a piece of her art and must take it home or better yet, learns to make their own. She thinks art should be accessible, affordable & fun and wants to help bring more art into your life. Come and get inspired by the ebb and flow of Eileen’s work and help her celebrate 70 years on earth - an amazing creative journey so far!
