My photography covers a broad range of interests, with a major specialty in focus stacked macro photography of all kinds of plant life. I also enjoy photographing wildlife, landscape, architectural, and portrait imagery.
What I have found fascinating in my specialty area of photography is to examine and image the full range of flora such: as flowers, seeds, trees, etc., in a detailed very close/microscopic level that exposes aspects of the plant life that are unusual, very interesting, and quite beautiful. The depth of field is very shallow in macro photography. To assure a sharp focus throughout the image I use a technique called focus stacking which takes many images at the different focal distances. I then, using software, blend them together into an overall extremely sharp image.
I took up fine art photography after my retirement. I had a 50 year career as a physicist/engineer in both industry and academia. Educationally, I have a BS from MIT, and an MS, PhD in physics from the University of Illinois. I retired in 2006 from my last position as a Professor in the UVA Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
In the last nine years, I have participated in many group photo exhibitions with the Charlottesville camera club at multiple venues in the C’ville area. I have had four extended one person exhibitions at: UVA hospital gallery, Waynesboro library, Grit coffee house, and Tabor Presbyterian church in Crozet. Recently, at the end of 2023, I had a two-person, two month show titled “Nature Big and Small” at the UVA Hospital gallery.
I am a member of the Charlottesville Camera Club (CCC). In the last six consecutive years, 2018 - 2023, I won the CCC James W. Simmons, Photographer of the year award.
